More Feathers

For the last week I've been working on these black feathers (pattern by Shape Moth, found here).

The blue feather I made last month for a block in the NMQA's president quilt.

We did a four day trip over the weekend to The Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado.  I've been feeling so worn down and tired with my sewing, I expected to come back feeling reenergized to sew and create again.  Four days without my sewing machine!  Four days without a computer or phone to distract me!

But when I got back I had a ton of catching up to with blog comments from the giveaway (over 600 individual entries!  blew me away!  lots of no-reply bloggers didn't leave an email address, including one of the winners) and blog comments for the Blogger's Quilt Festival posts.  And then there were all the things in my reader!  I was just overwhelmed again.

Working on the small feather.

I finally got to start sewing again yesterday morning.  But when I finished the block I didn't feel energized or excited.  And then I got a message from a friend confirming an impromptu trip to visit--her and her 18 month old daughter will be here this afternoon for two nights.  Mostly likely staying in my sewing room...so there went the whisper of motivation/sewjo I had left.

I used a scrap of my first shot cotton for the background, it's lovely, but I wish there was a little more contrast with the feathers!

Maybe it will return for the long weekend!  There is a quilt show starting tomorrow I'm hoping to go to, maybe it will inspire me!  Ten days left in the month and I am feeling soooo behind.  How about you?  What have you been working on?  Or what re-energizes your sewing spirit?

  1. I like these feathers! I made some myself for a throw pillow. I like the dark fabrics you chose, makes me think of a raven or a crow.

  2. I have to say that there are certainly a lot of distractions, and sometimes the distractions help foster the space (time away) I need to get excited about sewing again. But 600 comments? You are amazing for responding to everyone you could! Did it take all day? Usually having a purpose for a project (as a gift, to test a new technique/grow my skills... etc.) is what it takes to get me back in the groove. Honestly, that's why I have WiP's, I get started, lose inspiration for that project and set it aside until the spark reignites (or the deadline looms)! :)

  3. Beautiful feathers!! Don't worry about losing your "spirit"... It'll come back to ya. I lost my mojo a couple of weeks ago and finally got back into the swing of things by tackling some of the small projects on my list. Got me back in the mood to sew :-). Now I can't seem to want to stay out of my sewing room and work on some of the bigger projects.

  4. I hate when that happens, but things happen! Don't worry, I think motivation comes in cycles, which is maybe a good thing or we'd be sewing like all the time! Those feathers are great- I love feathers!

  5. The feathers look great! I think it's normal for the interest in sewing to be a little less sometimes. Just go with it and eventually something will start calling your name.

  6. Love your feathers! I think the green shot is awesome with the black! What are you planning on using them for?
As for feeling behind, my bloglovin feed is in the high triple digits and i keep telling myself to clear it and move on, but i just can't do it!

  8. Love those feathers. So sorry that you have lost your SewJo, sometimes the best thing is to have a break, read some nice books or magazines, play in your garden, watch a movie. Put a note on your blog that you're having a wee break from the computer too, so you're not overwhelmed when you come back. Maybe just sew something nice for yourself also, not for a show or a PIF, or bee block - just for you.

  9. I've been in a bit of a funk too! Darn kids/house/husband getting in the way of my sewing! Not to mention all the time I spend on the computer these days! Love the feathers! Those intricate paper pieced patterns take some time. Looks like you're doing well enough with your sewing time. I have to keep undoing the things I actually get done. I wish May wasn't going by so fast too!

  10. I love those feathers! Definitely have to try making my own when everything calms down!! I am having the same struggle with finding the time or energy to focus on finishing my projects. Hope you have a great weekend!

  11. Hang in there Renee! I'd suggest going 'off line' for a while, focussing on enjoying time with your friend and her daughter, and just letting the sew Jo return gradually (I say this from experience!) Big hugs!
