Raven Feathers mini quilt

Raven Feathers mini quilt, 15.5" square.

This is another (long overdue) pay it forward gift, this time for my brother!  And thankfully it is the last pay it forward gift on my list!  I really liked the idea of a pay it forward--so last year I signed up for two.  I signed up expecting to get some surprise item from two different people, while agreeing to "pay it forward" to a total of 6 people that signed up for mine.

Quilting and feather detail.

I never recieved anything from the PIFs I signed up for.  But I kept the PIF going anyway.

I had this fun idea to make a feather using black-on-black prints, so it would have some texture, but still look like a raven or crow feather.  I was only able to find 3 black-on-black fabrics at my LQS, so I decided black with grey prints would be okay.

I used the Forest quilt along feathers pattern by Shape Moth.  The green fabric is a crossweave scrap I got in a scrap pack, and the black border is Kona black.  Sorry I don't remember what the backing is!

I used Aurifil #1147 for the green swirls and Superior Thread So Fine in black for the border feathers.

Have you ever signed up for a pay it forward?  Did you get something out of it, and did you remember to send something to the people that signed up for yours?

  1. How sad that you never got anything! I did get a lovely set of quilted coasters from the one I signed up for. I have my first of the three I'm sending out ready to go in the mail tomorrow (it's my hexie stars mini quilt), another in the works and I still can't figure out what to make for the third. I love the black feather. It looks elegant and mystical at the same time.

  3. The mix of black and black and grey worked out really well. I love these feathers! I know from experience they have so many tiny pieces, nice work! The quilting is as always, gorgeous.

  5. I like the pattern you chose. I made her Otis the Owl pattern, but these feathers are neat, and i might have to give them a go if I ever catch up on my mountain of UFOs. The quilted feathers look lovely too. I don't think I'll be doing dark thread with a really light background again soon, since I didn't like how it showed every rough start & stop in my quilting, but yours looks spot on. The gray prints worked nicely; I like the slight value contrast they provided. I'm too greedy to do a pay it forward. But hey, I did finish your mini!

  10. Great mini! I haven't as I don't really get the idea of getting one and making 3 :) I rather exchange things with people I know from blogging and when I know it'll be received well and loved.

  11. I am not even exactly sure what a pay it forward is! Maybe another Aussie can tell me if we even have them here.
Regardless, these feathers are beautiful. I think introducing grey as you did is better than all black.

  12. I have never entered in any swaps or PIF's. But if I was going to.... I would definitely choose you for a partner! This piece is just gorgeous! Rainbow feathers are pretty, but this is stunning! I like that you chose a variety of prints. Really just beautiful!

  13. I love it. And it's manly enough for a guy. I won a pay-it-forward prize, where the gift was 9 fat quarters. I payed it forward with fabric and a pattern book. It was fun. Hopefully your gifts are still on there way.
