Hello! Welcome to my contribution to the Fabric-Quilt New Block Blog Hop! If you're here for the first time, Hi my name is Renee and I quilt on a Janome 6300 (domestic machine). Here are all the quilts I've made this year:

For this New Block blog hop I designed this 12" quilt block:

We were encouraged to design a block inspired by summer, and to me summer is a time for camping. My parents took me and my 3 siblings camping since we were very little, and I've taken my kids camping since they were babies. When I looked at tent quilt blocks I found several made with the iconic A-frame style tent. But I've never camped in a tent like that, I've always had a dome tent and decided to design my block after this photo I took outside of Durango, Colorado:

I kept the lines fairly simple so that someone new to paper piecing won't feel overwhelmed--this is a fairly simple block, and extra details can be added with quilting or embroidery (see mini quilt below)

If you're new to paper piecing here are the tutorials I liked best when I was getting started:
- Artisania Paper Piecing video series, plus links to other tutorials (this is the series that helped me finally "get" paper piecing)
In testing my block pattern and instructions I had fun picking different fabrics and colors:

I turned this one into a mini quilt (the fate of all these test blocks, actually) so I could show you how the quilting can add some of those awesome details:

Renee, I love this block. And of course your quilting makes the tent even more perfect! :) What a bummer that Arden didn't like his block after you made it; I think it looks like a planetarium is set up inside the tent mimicking the gorgeous night sky.

ReplyDeleteI love it! Camping is my favourite summer activity - our tent is 17' long to accomodate the 5 of us! The nighttime version is my favourite too, and I can't wait to see how you quilt it. Quilting your first version really brought it to life, especially the trees you put in front of the mountains.

I LOVE THIS BLOCK!!! Camping in Colorado has always been part of my life and I have fond memories of camping in the Durango area. I love the quilting you did in the finished block. How did you do the aspen trees?

ReplyDeleteI just love that you made multiple blocks with different fabrics and quilting it to show how versatile it can be. Sorry to hear your son didn't like his block. :( I think my favorite one is the one that has the stars in the night sky. Perfect fabric choices. I have some friends that camp all the time (they actually live in their RV) so I might make this into a mini for them to hang up.

ReplyDeleteLovely quilt block Renee! The one of the yellow tent glowing with the mountain background is one of those iconic images that I just love. Worth every itty bitty pesky piece on that one for those colors. Perfect :)

ReplyDeleteWhat a Fun Fun pattern Renee! You captured that mountain tent scene so well and then your awesome quilting just knocks it right out of the ballpark!... or should I say campground? I especially love the night time camping block - it really brings back memories of seeing the warm glow of light from inside tents as you walk through a campground. I can hear the guitar strumming even as i think of it.

* Size of the tent matters because when you buy camping tents you must first find out how many sleeping bags it can hold. When you have four people camping then you need to get a tent which is good for six people to accommodate all the baggage. Outdoor equipment
