Hello! Welcome to my contribution to the Fabric-Quilt New Block Blog Hop! If you're here for the first time, Hi my name is Renee and I quilt on a Janome 6300 (domestic machine). Here are all the quilts I've made this year:

My completed quilts so far in 2015! You can get links to each of these from the My Quilts tab at the top of the page. |
For this New Block blog hop I designed this 12" quilt block:
Mountain Camping paper pieced quilt block: in Fabri-Quilt solids from the Watermelon Summer bundle. |
We were encouraged to design a block inspired by summer, and to me summer is a time for camping. My parents took me and my 3 siblings camping since we were very little, and I've taken my kids camping since they were babies. When I looked at tent quilt blocks I found several made with the iconic A-frame style tent. But I've never camped in a tent like that, I've always had a dome tent and decided to design my block after this photo I took outside of Durango, Colorado:

Camping near Durango, Colorado in October, 2011. |
I kept the lines fairly simple so that someone new to paper piecing won't feel overwhelmed--this is a fairly simple block, and extra details can be added with quilting or embroidery (see mini quilt below)
You can download this pattern for FREE on Craftsy (link).

If you're new to paper piecing here are the tutorials I liked best when I was getting started:
- Artisania Paper Piecing video series, plus links to other tutorials (this is the series that helped me finally "get" paper piecing)
In testing my block pattern and instructions I had fun picking different fabrics and colors:
Mountain Camping paper pieced quilt block: colors based off the photograph. |
I turned this one into a mini quilt (the fate of all these test blocks, actually) so I could show you how the quilting can add some of those awesome details:
Mountain Camping paper pieced quilt block: turned into a mini quilt! |
Mountain Camping paper pieced quilt block: first test--a purple tent my daughter requested. |
Mountain Camping paper pieced quilt block: a blue tent for my son (he asked if the lines on the tent would go away, when I told him no he decided he didn't want this block). |
This blog hop is sponsored by Fabri-Quilt, and they provided me with 6 fat eighths to make a 12" quilt block to be donated to charity quilts made by the blog hop hosts.

Renee, I love this block. And of course your quilting makes the tent even more perfect! :) What a bummer that Arden didn't like his block after you made it; I think it looks like a planetarium is set up inside the tent mimicking the gorgeous night sky.
ReplyDeleteCamping! Why didn't I think of that? Your inspiration shows so clearly in your block design and in all the variations. Love it! Martha
ReplyDeleteI love all the color variations you have developed with this block. It is fantastic that you were able to abstract this cherished summer activity into such a lovely, graphic image!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun block. I love the tent :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great block! Love the design and the quilting.
ReplyDeleteOoooh, I love it! Right up my alley!
ReplyDeleteI love it! Camping is my favourite summer activity - our tent is 17' long to accomodate the 5 of us! The nighttime version is my favourite too, and I can't wait to see how you quilt it. Quilting your first version really brought it to life, especially the trees you put in front of the mountains.
ReplyDeleteI love your inspiration photo. You did a great job of translating it to fabric. Wonderful job on the quilting to bring the little block to life.
ReplyDeleteSo cute-Love them all!
ReplyDeleteI love your block! This block would work great in a row by row quilt. Wonderful quilting it really makes the block pop.
ReplyDeleteLove the story behind your block! What an amazing and original block!!! I am in awe!
ReplyDeleteThat photo is gorgeous! I love the nighttime tent!
ReplyDeleteI had considered doing a tent block, but now I am really glad I didn't because it wouldn't be nearly as cool as yours! The nighttime version is amazing, great job!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing. It will be fun to try making this block using your tutorial.
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! We just went camping a couple weeks ago. I love the way you quilted the mini. Amazing!
ReplyDeleteI think the night time version is my favorite as well. And it was fun to see the details you added with the quilting.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing and creating this special block. Camping has always been a part of my life so your block touched memories. I hope that you have a wonderful creative day!
ReplyDeleteSo many different looks with the block. Thank you for sharing the outdoors in a quilt block.

Wow, look how many versions you made! They are beautiful! I also love the nighttime one (those stars!) :)
ReplyDeleteVery creative!!
ReplyDeleteA great block Renee, and I love all the different interpretations of it. A block that tells a story is always catches my interest.
ReplyDeleteGreat details on the blocks - they really make them special.
ReplyDeleteLove your mountain camping nighttime. The quilting really does make this block.

ReplyDeleteLove this! The night one is my favorite, but that mini is awesome too! Great job! Beautiful work!
ReplyDeleteoh my goodness! Stunning, stunning, stunning! I love all of your different renditions! So imaginative.
ReplyDeleteAnd HOW did I miss that marvelous dresden quilt???!

Lori
I LOVE THIS BLOCK!!! Camping in Colorado has always been part of my life and I have fond memories of camping in the Durango area. I love the quilting you did in the finished block. How did you do the aspen trees?
ReplyDeleteThese look great! Such a good idea.
ReplyDeleteThis is how I spent most of my summer this year...and I miss my tent soooooo much! Thank you for a lovely block, I think I'll add it to my memory quilt of this year's vacation.
ReplyDeleteThis is an awesome block. You did a great job.
ReplyDeleteI love how you took the "summer" palette and designed a block that so perfectly encapsulates the season. Great job!
ReplyDeleteGreat block Renee! Ahh, I loved camping days when I was a kid, as well as when my kids were kids! Love the night time block.
ReplyDeleteLove your block
ReplyDeleteWhat a neat block! I see blocks for each season and different times of day! I love the free-motion quilting on the mini!
ReplyDeleteI just love that you made multiple blocks with different fabrics and quilting it to show how versatile it can be. Sorry to hear your son didn't like his block. :( I think my favorite one is the one that has the stars in the night sky. Perfect fabric choices. I have some friends that camp all the time (they actually live in their RV) so I might make this into a mini for them to hang up.
ReplyDeleteOutstanding block Renee. It is a very cool looking block. You did a awesome job. Thank you very much for the tutorial.
ReplyDeleteSo creative and it is really nice looking block too. crystalbluern at onlineok dot com
ReplyDeleteLovely quilt block Renee! The one of the yellow tent glowing with the mountain background is one of those iconic images that I just love. Worth every itty bitty pesky piece on that one for those colors. Perfect :)
ReplyDeleteYou captured the awesomeness of camping in so many neat ways. I really like how the quilting brings the block to life.
ReplyDeleteI loved camping though it always seemed to rain on us - great idea for a block!
ReplyDeleteWhat a Fun Fun pattern Renee! You captured that mountain tent scene so well and then your awesome quilting just knocks it right out of the ballpark!... or should I say campground? I especially love the night time camping block - it really brings back memories of seeing the warm glow of light from inside tents as you walk through a campground. I can hear the guitar strumming even as i think of it.
ReplyDeleteRenee, I would never have thought of this, but it's such a neat block and shouts Summer to me, too. Thanks for showing it in a couple different palettes at the same time. So funny about your son's take on the seams! Don't they have funny ideas?
ReplyDeleteLove love love the night time block as well!! And the quilted one, wow! Your skills will never stop being amazing to me!
ReplyDeleteSuch a fantastic pattern Renee!
* Size of the tent matters because when you buy camping tents you must first find out how many sleeping bags it can hold. When you have four people camping then you need to get a tent which is good for six people to accommodate all the baggage. Outdoor equipment
