Blue Hexie mini quilt

Back in November I made this mini quilt for a secret friend swap at Quilt Bliss.  I forgot to post about it until now!

Blue Hexie mini quilt, measures about 18" x 20" (I think?)

I knew my secret friend liked blues and teals, and finally I decided to use up some of the 1" hexies I've been making from my scrap bins (I've been making them for about a year now, and have around 1600!).  I hand sewed them together and then sewed them to the background fabric (linen) with my machine.  The hexies have an extra layer of batting to give them a little more depth.

I quilted the all over free motion quilting swirly vines with Aurifil variegated teal #4662 (Creme de Menthe).

After secretly delivering this mini quilt to my swap partner's space she hung it up above her machine with washi tape for the rest of the weekend, and many other quilters oohed and aaahed over it.

I also gave her one of the quilted paisley mini mini quilts I was making at the time and some other goodies!

So what did I get from my secret friend (a different woman)?  Some chocolates, a little sewing kit and a little wood sign.  It was a big disappointment--the swap was for something handmade, a treat, and a notion (and no, the wood sign was not handmade).  My secret partner didn't make me anything!  I was so frustrated by the end of the weekend when I realized there was no grand finale.  This swap was my last attempt at trusting swaps, ya know?  And it was a total flop, so that's when I swore of anonymous group swaps!

  1. You mini quilt is stunning, and it was awesome to see how excited your swap partner was to receive it. :) I was so bummed for you to not receive anything handmade in return.

  3. I am so sorry that happened to you, especially after you made such a lovely quilt for your partner. I have always liked the idea of swaps, but haven't had the best of luck with them either! I finally learned to stay away from them, but still feel like I am missing out on something wonderful!!!

  4. Wow! You really have had rotten luck with those secret swaps, haven't you?! How disappointing not to get something handmade just for you :( It's nice your partner was so excited about her gift, though, (which is gorgeous) and that she hung it up for everyone else to enjoy.

  6. :( Renee, that just sucks! You obviously put a lot of thought and work into this quilt, it is gorgeous and then to be let down . . . again :( I have to say that your experiences are the very reason I don't even get a little tempted to do the anonymous swaps.

And I know how excited your partner was to receive your quilt ;)

  7. I love the color of thread that you used here. It really makes the hexies pop. Yay to dense quilting! Nay to sad swaps. At least you can go on knowing yours was much appreciated!

  8. Well, the quilt you made is fantastic. The colors, the design, and the quilting. I'm glad it was so well received. I've had more good luck than bad in swaps but the bad really does sting. I'm sorry for your experience.

  12. Just keep in your mind that you held up your end of the deal and didn't disappoint someone. I don't join swaps of any kind because I never know what will happen in my life to keep me from finishing something and I do not want someone disappointed because of me! Your blue hexy quilt is just fabulous! So sorry that you were let down!

  13. You have had bad luck with swaps, Renee. But you made something amazing and I bet the recipient was thrilled and you had fun while making it. I tend to have so much fun making that I forget that something is also coming my way until it turns up.
Your 1600 hexies make me feel better about my recent decision to make hexies out of my scraps. It is a bit hit and miss why some scraps become hexies and others become squares, but I am working on a plan for a handful of the hexies.
